CGI Window Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
CGI window installation in San Jose typically runs $1,400 to $3,200 per window installed, depending on size, series, and whether the frame needs refitting. We stock CGI-compatible hardware and can usually schedule installation within a week of your estimate. Most San Jose homeowners discover a CGI window issue the same way: a sash that won’t stay up, a crank that spins without moving, or a seal that’s fogged between the panes. These are fixable problems, and the replacement part matters more than most people realize.
CGI builds impact-rated windows common in coastal and high-wind zones, but plenty of San Jose homes have them because the product holds up well in sun and dry heat. The hardware inside a CGI window is not universal. Balance springs, pivot bars, and locking mechanisms vary by series and by the window’s exact size. Put the wrong part in and the window works for a month, then binds or drops. That’s the gap we close. Elliot Vance has been fitting CGI windows in San Jose since before the current series updates, including homes in Willow Glen where older frames and custom openings mean there is no such thing as a standard swap.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI’s current residential line includes the Estate Collection, the Sentinel series, and the Classic series. The window labels matter more than the marketing name. Every CGI window has a sticker or etched code on the frame edge or inside the top track. It lists the series, the glass type, and a manufacturing date. If the sticker is gone, we measure the sash and match the balance shoe profile. The Estate Collection and Sentinel series use different balance systems, so a part from one will not fit the other without modification.
Here is the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: CGI changed the balance shoe design on Estate windows around 2018. An older Estate window with a pre-2018 shoe needs a different part than a newer one with the same exterior appearance. If you buy an OEM balance for a post-2018 window and your window is older, it simply won’t seat. We check the manufacturing code before we order anything. For most CGI windows, OEM parts are worth the extra cost because the tolerances are exactly right. Aftermarket equivalents exist and can work, but the cheap ones lose tension faster, and the window drops within a season. San Jose’s dry heat accelerates that process by drying out the lubricant inside the shoe.
Signs Your CGI Window Installation Is Failing
- Top sash drops when you let go. The balance spring has lost tension or the pivot bar is worn. If it drops fast, the shoe is done. A slow drop means the spring is on its way out and will fail completely soon.
- Crank turns but the window doesn’t move. The operator gear is stripped or the arm has come off the track. CGI operators are buried in the frame, so a spinning crank almost always means replacement, not adjustment.
- Fog between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. San Jose’s temperature swings flex the seal, and after about 15 to 20 years, most dual-pane units in this climate start to show condensation between the panes. A failed IGU is a full sash replacement, not a dry-out fix.
- Window won’t lock without force. The lock keeper and latch are no longer aligned, usually because the sash has settled or the frame has shifted. Forcing it bends the latch arms, and then the lock fails entirely.
- Draft or whistle around the window on windy days. The weatherstripping or the sash seal has compressed beyond service. CGI windows are built airtight, so any whistle means a seal is gone. Left alone, you’ll pay for it in heating and cooling bills.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
What you pay depends mostly on whether we’re replacing hardware inside the existing frame or installing a full new CGI window. Here’s the honest range for San Jose:
- Balance spring or shoe replacement: $180 – $340 per window, parts and labor included.
- Operator or crank replacement: $220 – $420 per window, depending on the CGI series.
- Full sash replacement (failed IGU): $500 – $900 per sash, including new glass and resealing.
- Full new CGI window installed: $1,400 – $3,200 per window, depending on size, series, glass package, and whether the opening needs reframing.
Every one of these numbers goes in writing before any work starts. It includes the part, the labor, the haul-away, and the seal. We don’t add a materials surcharge at the door and we don’t pad the labor because the window is in a second-story opening. Meridian Windows and Doors is an independent service provider, not affiliated with CGI. That means we spec the repair the window actually needs, not the part the manufacturer’s warranty department wants to sell you. The work itself is covered in writing for a full 365 days. If it fails in that period, we come back at no charge, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
You can re-seat a loose weatherstrip and clean a track yourself. That’s about where it ends on a CGI window. Balance springs on vinyl and aluminum windows can be replaced by a patient homeowner, but the risk is to the window, not your hands. Get the wrong tension rating, and the window launches out of the frame or drops hard enough to crack the sash. Both are more expensive than the service call. Operators are buried in the frame, and extracting one without gouging the vinyl takes the right thin-blade tool and the patience to use it.
You’ll spend $80 to $150 on a part that might be wrong, an afternoon of your time, and then you’ll still have a window that doesn’t work right. Or you can call (669) 201-3739, tell us the series from the label, and we’ll show up with the correct part the first time. We’d rather you make the call before the window gets cracked.
FAQs
How long do CGI window parts last in San Jose? The glass and frame will outlast the hardware. In San Jose’s dry climate, balance springs and crank operators typically last 10 to 18 years before they wear out. Storm windows and windows facing direct afternoon sun fail on the earlier side.
Can a failing CGI window be repaired instead of replaced? In most cases, yes. If the frame is sound and the sash is not cracked, we can replace the balance system, the operator, the lock, or the weatherstripping without pulling the whole window. A failed IGU means a new sash, but the frame stays.
How long does a CGI window installation take? A hardware replacement on one window takes 45 minutes to an hour, including cleanup. A full window replacement on a standard opening takes about two hours, and a full-house job of ten or twelve windows runs three to five working days depending on site conditions.
Do you stock CGI parts on the truck? We stock the most common balance springs, pivot bars, and crank operators for current-gen CGI Estate and Sentinel windows. Odd sizes and older series parts get ordered, which adds two to four business days. Call (669) 201-3739 with the label code and we’ll tell you if we have it on hand before you book.
