CGI Door Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
CGI door installation in San Jose typically runs $450 – $1,200 installed depending on the door model, hardware configuration, and whether we’re replacing rollers, hinges, or the full panel assembly. We stock CGI and CGI-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a door that suddenly drags, a latch that won’t catch, or a panel that’s visibly sagging after years of sun and salt air working against the hardware.
CGI doors are built for hurricane zones, which matters in San Jose more than people expect. The same reinforced frames and heavy-gauge aluminum that hold up to 150-mph winds also hold up to the dry heat and occasional storms we get here, but the moving parts wear out long before the panel does. When that happens, you don’t need a new door. You need the right installation done correctly. That’s what we do, and we’re an independent service provider, not a CGI factory outlet. That means we spec the part that fits your door, not the part CGI happens to have on a shelf this quarter.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
We install parts across CGI’s full residential line, including the Estate Collection, the Classic Collection, and the Sentinel Series, which is the one we see most often in San Jose homes built after 2010. The compatibility gotcha with CGI is the hinge system. CGI uses a proprietary adjustable hinge on many of their newer doors, and an off-the-shelf hinge from a hardware store won’t seat correctly in the CGI jamb. The difference is small, maybe 3/16 of an inch in the reveal, but it’s enough to make the door bind or leave a gap at the weatherstripping.
To identify your door, look for the CGI label on the hinge-side edge of the panel, usually a silver sticker with a serial number starting with “CG.” If the label’s worn off, we measure the hinge pocket and the panel thickness. Most CGI residential doors are 1-3/4 inches thick, but some of the Sentinel Series units run 2 inches. That extra quarter inch changes which rollers and tracks we spec, and it’s the kind of detail that gets skipped when someone guesses. On OEM versus aftermarket: for seals and rollers, quality aftermarket equivalents from Prime-Line or similar are fine and often cost 30 – 40% less. For hinges and locking hardware, we recommend OEM. The CGI tolerances on those parts are tight, and the aftermarket versions we’ve pulled out of failed installs didn’t hold adjustment.
Signs Your CGI Door Installation Is Failing
- Door drags or scrapes the threshold. This is almost always a worn bottom roller or a hinge that’s slipped out of adjustment. The roller bearings flatten over time, especially in San Jose’s dry summers, and the door starts riding lower on the track.
- Latch won’t catch or requires force. The strike plate has moved or the hinge sag has pulled the door out of alignment. Forcing it closed wears the latch mechanism faster and eventually strips the internal gears in the lock.
- Visible gap at the top or side of the panel. This is a hinge failure, plain and simple. In Willow Glen, we see it constantly on older CGI doors where the original hinges were never re-torqued after the first settling year.
- Door feels heavy or resistance mid-swing. That’s usually a track issue: debris in the bottom track, a bent section, or a roller that’s seized. The panel itself hasn’t failed, but running it repeatedly while it’s binding will warp the jamb and turn a $300 part swap into a $1,500 full-frame job.
- Squealing or grinding when opening. Bearings are done. Lubrication will quiet it for a week, but the sound comes back because the roller itself has worn past tolerance. Replacement is the only fix that holds.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Jose, a typical CGI door installation runs $450 – $700 for roller and hinge replacement on a standard single door, $700 – $1,200 when the job involves multi-point locking hardware or a full panel re-hang. The range comes down to three things: which parts failed, whether the jamb needs re-shimming, and whether we’re dealing with a standard swing door or a heavier Sentinel Series unit that needs two techs to handle safely.
Every quote from us is a written, line-item price before work starts. Parts are listed separately, labor is listed separately, and the number does not move at the door. No change orders, no “we found something else” markup. The installation itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the door binds, the latch fails, or the panel goes out of adjustment within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Also, as part of the Garrison Partners family, we hold every job to The Garrison Standard, which frankly is a longer way of saying the work gets done right the first time or we’re back on our dime.

DIY or Call Us?
Some things on a CGI door are safe to check yourself. Look at the bottom track for debris. Check whether the screws on the hinge plates are still snug in the jamb. That’s diagnosis, and it helps us when you call. But the installation itself, the part where we’re pulling a heavy panel off its hinges and re-balancing the load, is not a Saturday afternoon job. A full-size CGI door panel weighs 150 pounds or more. It can crush a hand, break a wrist, or worse if it comes off the track. We use panel lifters and two-man crews for a reason.
The other thing that goes wrong with DIY is the adjustment. CGI hinges have a specific tolerance, and if you over-torque the set screws you’ll strip the jamb. Now you’re paying for a full frame repair on top of the part you already bought. Our techs are background-checked, uniformed, and Elliot Vance personally trains every installer on CGI hardware before they’re sent to a job. You’ll know exactly who’s walking through the door, and the price is already on paper. Call (669) 201-3739 if you want it handled by someone who’s done it before.
FAQs
Rollers typically last 8 – 12 years and hinges 10 – 15 years in San Jose, though doors that face direct afternoon sun or sit within a few miles of the bay tend to wear out 2 – 3 years faster due to heat cycling and salt air corrosion on the bearing assemblies.
If you’re near the bottom of that range and hearing grinding, call (669) 201-3739 for an exact diagnosis. Estimates are free.
Rollers cannot be repaired. Once the bearing is worn or the wheel is flattened, replacement is the only option that holds. Hinges can sometimes be re-torqued to buy time, but if the knuckle is worn or the jamb screws have backed out repeatedly, the hinge needs replacing. We’ll tell you which one applies to your door, and we won’t sell you a part you don’t need.
A standard roller and hinge replacement takes 1 – 2 hours. A full panel re-hang with new locking hardware runs 3 – 4 hours. We show up with the parts on the truck, so there’s no “we’ll be back next week” unless it’s a specialty order.
We stock common CGI rollers, hinges, strike plates, and seals on our trucks, along with compatible parts from PGT, CWS, and ES Windows for other jobs we see. Unusual hardware, like a specific multi-point lock assembly, usually arrives within 3 – 5 business days. Call (669) 201-3739 with your door’s serial number and we’ll tell you what we’ve got on hand and what needs to ship.
